This performance explores the unexpected similarities between so-called "early music" of the past and "jazz" of the present. Like the modern 'lead sheet,' music written down prior to 1800 carried the composer's expectation that performers would expand on the original raw melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic inspiration by invoking the spirit of improvisation.

Featuring flutist and saxophonist Stan Strickland, pianist Peter Cassino, saxophonist Paul Saunders, bassist Sean Farias, percussionist Miki Matsuki, soprano Cristi Catt, mezzo-soprano Laurie Monahan, Baroque flautists Carol Epple and Na'ama Lion, violinist Dana Maiben, viola da gambist  Jane Hershey, lutenist Douglas Freundlich, harpsichordists Francis Conover Fitch and Peter Sykes; dancers Camilla Finlay and Ken Pierce.

Longy's FamilySERIES offers four engaging, interactive musical performances featuring gifted faculty, students, and guest artists, designed to introduce families to the wonderful world of music. All FamilySERIES concerts take place in Pickman Concert Hall, 27 Garden Street, Cambridge.

CURIOUS GEORGE goes to MUSIC SCHOOL

A monkey in a music school? Oh, no! Oh, yes! Come along with H.A. Rey's "very curious" George as he visits a music school, meets different instruments, and learns about the powerful sounds, images, and emotions created by music. In this interactive program, children become conductors, singers, active listeners, and even "drumming" partners with George! This performance is based upon H.A. and Margret Rey's creation with permission from the Rey-Waldstein Foundation.

PETER and the WOLF
Sunday, December 9, 2007 at 2:00 PM and JUST ADDED: 2nd show at 3:15 pm
Join us for Prokofiev's classic telling of the adventures of young Peter, his duck, a twittering bird, a sneaky cat.and, of course, the wolf! The musical and narrative magic of this popular folk story entertains children of all ages while exposing them to the inner workings of the woodwind quintet. Audience members will be invited to ask questions and share their musical experiences with performers during the instrument demonstrations after the concert.

INTRODUCTION to the ORCHESTRA

Back by popular demand, this annual concert features the Longy Youth Chamber Orchestra, conducted by George Ogata, and highlights talented soloists from Longy's Young Performers program. Mr. Ogata introduces all of the instruments and engages audience members of all ages as he talks about the wonderful world of the orchestra. Members of the orchestra will be available to showcase their instruments during a post concert 'instrument petting zoo'.

KITCHEN MUSIC and the BUCKET BRIGADE

Did you know that you can make music out of ordinary things? First, find out what's cooking in a percussionist's kitchen, as Longy's master chef Taki Masuko creates Kitchen Music in this thrilling rhythmic showcase. Then, feel the beat of Matt Taylor's Bucket Brigade, as kids show you what they can drum up using plastic buckets, a couple of sticks, and their imaginations. After the show, you can explore the 'musical kitchen' with the performers.

Recognized for its virtuosity, exuberant performance style, and daring repertory choices, the Pacifica Quartet returns to the Longy School of Music for four 2007-2008 Visiting Artist in Chamber Music events. As Visiting Artists, violinists Simin Ganatra and Sibbi Bernhardsson, violist Masumi Rostad, and cellist Brandon Vamos will work closely with Longy's students and community over the next four years.

The Visiting Artists in Chamber Music program is made possible by a generous gift from Adelaide and John Zabriskie.

"LONGY AT THE REGATTABAR" FEATURING THE PACIFICA QUARTET
As presented by Longy, this is a music milestone with uncommon pizzazz - the first performance of chamber music at the Regattabar, an acclaimed jazz club in Harvard Square. It will feature the internationally renowned Pacifica Quartet, joined by pianist Wayman Chin, chair of Longy's Chamber Music Program. Conservatory students will also join the quartet in a movement from Mendelssohn's glorious Octet. Don't miss this opportunity to hear seasoned artists along with several world-class musicians-in-the-making who are training at Longy. Refreshments will be served between pieces, creating a relaxed club atmosphere during this evening to remember.
