Collaborative Piano Studies at Longy
The graduate-level Collaborative Piano program prepares performers for careers in chamber music, vocal coaching, and accompanying. Close coordination among piano, voice, chamber music, and collaborative piano faculty ensures that each student gains the necessary technical, stylistic, repertorial, and language skills for successful collaborative pianists. Frequent performances and multiple opportunities for specialization and individual exploration allow these skills to mature in an atmosphere of practicality and artistic refinement.

Individual instruction, classes, and coached ensembles establish strong bonds with faculty specializing in vocal and instrumental accompanying. Studio lessons primarily address collaborative works, but also continue to develop students' fundamental pianistic skills, including solo literature. Skill-focused classes address techniques of vocal and chamber coaching, diction, continuo playing, and orchestral reductions. Repertory classes systematically review traditions of art song, opera, and instrumental and vocal chamber music, and develop students' analytical insights into the special issues of small ensemble works.

Collaborative Piano Performance at Longy
Collaborative pianists perform regularly with Longy's best musicians, while gaining experience in the Boston musical scene. Students appear not only in class concerts, but also in formal chamber evenings and as principal performers in the School's frequent concerts.
