Master of Music Degree in Opera Performance
Graduate Performance Diploma in Opera
Opera at Longy
Master of Music and Graduate Performance Diploma candidates become members of Opera at Longy, a full-scale training company of graduate-level singing actors. Each academic year centers on at least one staged work with orchestra from the standard repertory, in addition to evenings of one-act operas and imaginative scenes programs. Opera at Longy has produced several American and Boston-area premieres and provides opportunities for singers to work with internationally recognized guest artists in workshop performances and recording projects. Additionally, opera students perform regularly in oratorio and concert opera productions with orchestras throughout New England. Students' individual artistic and professional progress is carefully nurtured within an environment of high standards and thorough professionalism.
Weekly voice lessons and private coachings concentrate on technique, complete roles, and preparation of audition repertory. Full productions and scenes are prepared in the Opera Workshop, while Aria/Monologue classes hone individual performance skills in both sung and spoken drama. Additional departmental requirements in diction, acting, and the history of opera reinforce this emphasis on careful preparation and frequent performance. For experienced singers in the Graduate Performance Diploma program, these courses provide the training generally necessary for professional success on the operatic stage. For Master of Music candidates, the core studies in opera are complemented by additional training in interpretation and musicianship that ensure that students emerge as secure, well-rounded performers.
