Piano Studies at Longy
Longy pianists study solo and chamber literature in an atmosphere of collegiality and individual growth. Forming a community of advanced performers, graduate-level and gifted undergraduate pianists appear frequently in public and at School concerts. The broadly based curriculum stresses exposure to a variety of technical and interpretive approaches. High artistic standards and an ethos of inclusive learning foster positive competition and a nurturing environment.
Studio instruction concentrates on solo repertory, with artist-faculty trained in several traditions. Highly practical coursework in literature, sight-reading and keyboard musicianship, accompanying, and pedagogy stresses active participation and group learning. Each year, masterclasses with luminaries such as Leon Fleisher, Richard Goode, Robert Levin, Menahem Pressler, and Grant Johannesen provide additional opportunities for expert and inspired coaching. Classroom electives in analysis, chamber and vocal repertory, chamber coaching, and continuo playing allow degree and diploma candidates to broaden their experience in artistically and professionally important areas.
Piano Performance at Longy
Solo recitals, formal department concerts, and weekly performance hours provide an unusually large and diverse array of performance opportunities. Students perform in chamber ensembles, in addition to their collaborative work with singers and instrumentalists in the Collaborative Piano Department. Students also perform frequently in Boston-area concert series, radio broadcasts, and School and community recording projects.
