String Studies at Longy
Longy string students experience a dynamic combination of solo, chamber, and orchestral performance opportunities. By examining repertories, performance practices, and theoretical issues, they continuously enlarge their technical facility and artistic insight. This stimulating environment of investigation, practice, and performance builds an ethos of artistic excellence, community, and independence among the department's select group of graduate students and musically mature undergraduates. Studio lessons shape the fundamental skills of each student, from technique and repertory to aesthetic ideals and professional goals. Balancing this intensive individual study is the Department Seminar, which brings together the entire department for an integrated series of masterclasses, lectures, and workshops on performance practice, string literature, and orchestral performance issues. Understanding that most performers eventually teach, Longy has developed and gained recognition for a carefully conceived string pedagogy curriculum. A year of string pedagogy is required of Master of Music and Undergraduate Diploma candidates

String Performance at Longy
Students perform major orchestral, solo, and chamber works every semester in many settings at Longy and throughout the Boston area. Each string player performs in the Longy Chamber Orchestra in major orchestral and concerto concerts and Opera at Longy productions. Coached chamber ensembles explore works from the Baroque to the present, including quartets, trios, and works with piano, voice, and winds. Thematic departmental concerts and weekly performance hours give additional opportunities for performances.

String Pedagogy Studies
A two-year string pedagogy curriculum allows graduate-level performers to gain skills and experience in teaching and coaching beginning and intermediate violin, viola, cello, and double bass students. A thorough review of methods, materials, and historical pedagogy complements extensive observation of master teachers and practice teaching under the supervision of Longy's Preparatory and Continuing Studies faculty.
