Off-Campus Housing

Students are encouraged to use the Longy Housing Network, one of many resources available to help you find a place to live. All new students will automatically receive all Longy Housing Network emails.
New and returning students who are looking for roommates can fill out a Roommate Request Form. All roommate requests will be posted on the Longy Housing Network.
Another great place to find housing is through Craigslist. Many students have successfully found housing and/or roommates through this website.

Areas of Cambridge and Boston you can begin your housing search include: Somerville (Davis Square and Porter Square), Watertown, Harvard Square (it’s expensive here), and Central Square. Allston is another area of Boston where students live. Allston is located across the Charles River and often has cheaper rent than Cambridge. All of these locations are in walking distance of Longy or a quick subway/bus ride.

Feel free to contact Claire Raphaelson at claire.raphaelson@longy.edu or Alex Powell at alex.powell@longy.edu if you have questions about your housing search or would like more information about the various neighborhoods in the Boston area.

Immunization Requirements

All students enrolled more than half-time are required by Massachusetts law to provide documentation of immunization against measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria and hepatitis B. All students must fill out the immunization form below and return it to the Academic Affairs Office (attn.: Karen Burciaga) by January 15, 2012 in order to be eligible for matriculation. Students who do not comply with the immunization requirements are subject to a fine and a hold on registration.

Health Insurance Requirements and Waiver Information

Massachusetts law requires all ¾ time and full-time students to have health insurance coverage.  All students who are registered at ¾ time or full-time are automatically enrolled in the Longy Health Insurance plan, and the cost of the health insurance is billed to your account. You can waive the Longy Health Insurance if you are enrolled in an insurance plan of comparable coverage by submitting the online waiver form. This may be done by visiting http://www.gallagherkoster.com/longy .The deadline to submit your online waiver is January 20, 2012.

Students currently enrolled in Longy's student health plan can find more information and search for preferred providers by specialty or location at http://www.gallagherkoster.com/longy

* International Students are required to enroll in the Longy health insurance plan and are not eligible to waive.

On-Campus Employment

While On-Campus Employment (OCE) opportunities are available at Longy, the majority of these positions are limited to part-time hours. Depending on the job description and responsibilities, OCE pay-rates range from $8.00 to $12.00 per hour. The majority of OCE jobs are typically found in the library (checking out library materials, stocking shelves, etc.) and the concert office (ushers, stage managers). There are also several positions in the admissions, development, and facilities offices, but job openings are somewhat limited. OCE jobs are advertised in September and all students will have the opportunity to apply at that time.

Students also have the opportunity to engage in outside gigs through the Longy Gig Office. Gigging opportunities include performances at community events and functions, playing with local orchestras, and teaching.

* Note: All international and domestic students are eligible for on-campus employment. However, international students cannot work off-campus during their first academic year in the United States. International students are eligible to work off-campus through Curricular Practical Training (CPT) during their second year of study.

These records can also include the funds of outside agencies or sponsors. All international students must submit proof of financial support that they, or their sponsors, can cover the cost of attendance for one full year at Longy.

* Make an appointment at the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your home country. Make sure you bring all required documents to your appointment. It is recommended you make your appointment well in advance of your travel departure date. Estimated visa appointment wait times can be found here: http://www.travel.state.gov/visa/temp/wait/tempvisitors_wait.php

* For detailed information on applying for your F-1 visa please visit:   http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1268.html#need

Students currently in the U.S. in valid F-1 status do not have to pay the SEVIS fee. The fee is not required from students transferring to a new school or changing to another degree program or level within 5 months of completing a previous F-1 program.

The student’s SEVIS record will be transferred to Longy from the student’s previous school after submitting a completed Eligibility Confirmation Form for School I-20 Transfer. Once the SEVIS record has been transferred, Longy will issue the student a new I-20.
