The Undergraduate Diploma is a comprehensive, four-year course of musical study, providing stimulating and professionally relevant musical training for talented performers and composers. The Undergraduate Diploma's design enables each student to develop a high level of skill in performance or composition within a strong and varied framework of supporting coursework. Undergraduates often work alongside graduate students in ensembles and performance and repertory courses.

Schoolwide requirements for the Undergraduate Diploma include Fundamentals of Musicianship (12 credits, taken over 4 or 6 semesters depending on placement in the regular or accelerated track), Harmony (8 credits, taken over 4 semesters), Music History, including Twentieth-Century History and Analysis (8 credits, taken over 4 semesters), Form and Analysis (4 credits, taken over 2 semesters), Counterpoint (2 credits, 1 semester), Introduction to Eurhythmics (2 credits, taken over 2 semesters), and Improvisation (1 credit, 1 semester, to be selected from the list of improvisation distribution requirements). In addition, all Undergraduate Diploma candidates must participate in Experiential Education (2 credits, taken over 2 semesters), during their third or fourth years of study, and pass a proficiency examination in piano.

For students in performance departments, a promotional jury demonstrating sufficient progress in the major instrument must be passed at the end of the first, second, and third years of study. Undergraduate Diploma candidates may elect to present a third-year recital instead of the promotional jury, and a fourth-year Diploma recital is required of all performance majors.

Major Areas: Composition, Organ, Piano, Strings, Voice, and Woodwinds and Brass.

Level: Undergraduate (high school diploma or demonstrated equivalent required).

Normal Program Length and Credits: 4 years, 95 credits required for graduation (97 in the Woodwinds and Brass Department).
