Introduction
Each Longy degree and diploma program
offers rigorous yet flexible training that develops
not only musicians’ technical and expressive
skills but also their identity as articulate advocates
for art music. All programs are characterized by
high standards of excellence, while their differences
reflect the varied levels of experience and goals
found among talented and motivated student musicians.
The Undergraduate Diploma (which may be expanded
to a Bachelor of Music through Longy’s joint
program with Emerson College) includes a particularly
strong emphasis on musicianship, while the highly
selective, graduate-level Artist Diploma consists
almost entirely of performance work. The school’s
central Master of Music programs include departmental
requirements, schoolwide requirements, distribution
requirements, and electives, balancing performance,
interpretation, and musicianship thoroughly and imaginatively.
The Graduate Performance Diploma, on the same musical
level as the Master of Music program, assumes strong
general musicianship and allows exclusive focus on
performance and interpretation. Longy is also a center
for the study of Dalcroze Eurhythmics and offers
the Dalcroze Certificate and License.
