Financing your Longy Education

While the primary responsibility for financing the cost of education remains with students, their families, and sponsors, Longy's aid programs help qualified students finance their education after their own resources have been fully utilized.

Sources of assistance include the following:

Institutional: Longy Scholarship and Assistantship
Federal: Pell Grant, Direct Stafford Loan, Direct PLUS Loan, and Direct Grad PLUS
Private Loans: Private education loans are considered last resort financing. The school does not maintain a preferred lender list. Students may explore this option on ELM Resources.

When to Apply for Financial Aid

To be eligible for the full range of financial aid available, students must apply for financial aid each year. Students must make Satisfactory Academic Progress to retain Longy scholarships and cannot default on prior student loans to be eligible for federal and state funds.

Students may apply for privately funded scholarships from outside sources on their own at least a year prior to the academic year. The Office of Student Financial Assistance provides a tip sheet for how to do an online scholarship search. Students should be cautious of scams and apply to legitimate scholarships organizations. Students are advised to research the organizations thoroughly and submit applications before deadlines. Many fraternal, industrial, community, and religious organizations sponsor scholarship and loan programs. Financial plans should be made well in advance of any payment deadlines.

Longy Scholarships and Assistantships

Longy Scholarship and assistantships are merit-based awards and are determined by one or more of the following criteria: the student's artistic and academic accomplishments and the School's programmatic needs. For a new applicant to be considered for scholarships and assistantships, the Scholarship and Financial Aid section of the online application must be completed.
There are a limited number of assistantships for qualified incoming students.  Assistantship awards are applied toward tuition costs.
The Scholarship Committee re-evaluates awards each year for students who complete the Renewal Application. Scholarships are awarded for 4, full-time semesters for a 2 year graduate program and for 8, full-time semesters for the Undergraduate Diploma program.
Scholarship and assistantship awards are based on full-time enrollment. Master of Music and Undergraduate Diploma candidates approved for less than full-time enrollment by the Dean of the Conservatory will have revised awards. Scholarships are not awarded to half- and three-quarter-time students past the equivalent of the normal length of full-time residency. For students who are approved for less than full-time enrollment in the Master of Music or Undergraduate Diploma programs, the Committee will pro-rate the award. Assistantships are generally kept at the same dollar level but considered in the proration calculation.

Named Scholarships

Longy designates named scholarships to students who meet the eligibility requirements of each award. No separate application is required. All financial aid applicants are considered for the awards for which they are qualified. Named scholarship designations are made both upon admission and at the beginning of the fall semester. A student’s scholarship amount does not change as a result of the designation. Click here to learn more about Longy’s named scholarships.
