Prescreening Guidelines:Prescreening recordings are required for all Vocal Performance, Opera, and Artist Diploma applicants and must be submitted by December 15 using ArtsApp. Longy does not expect applicants to submit a studio-quality recording; we are listening for the quality of musicianship and performance, not the quality of the recording itself.

Brass
Undergraduate Diploma

  1. Two complete works from contrasting periods
  2. An etude demonstrating the applicant’s technical and musical level
  3. Three contrasting orchestral excerpts from the standard repertory

Master of Music/Graduate Performance Diploma

  1. A fast and slow movement from a major concerto from the standard repertory
  2. A complete sonata in contrasting style to the concerto
  3. A work composed after 1920
  4. Five contrasting orchestral excerpts from the standard repertory

Chamber Music
A full recital program which must include:

  1. Contrasting major works from the standard repertory
  2. A movement or complete work composed after 1960

Collaborative Piano

  1. A solo work
  2. A complete instrumental sonata
  3. The accompaniment of two art songs in contrasting languages

Composition
Submission of three representative compositions scored for various media. Recordings of performed works are encouraged. All compositions and recordings should be uploaded via ArtsApp; scores should not be mailed.

Dalcroze Eurhythmics
All applicants must demonstrate instrumental or vocal proficiency:

  1. Pianists must perform a selection of pieces demonstrating graduate-level piano skills
  2. Singers must present a program consisting of three songs in English and at least one other language
  3. Instrumentalists (other than piano) must perform one movement from a concerto and two movements from a standard sonata from contrasting stylistic periods

Applicants will also be assessed on musicianship, solfege, and improvisation abilities.

Early Music
Three selections from contrasting stylistic periods before c. 1800. Singers must perform works in three languages; singers will also be asked to sight-read.

Modern American Music
Classically-trained applicants:

  1. Three works of the major repertory from contrasting stylistic periods
  2. One jazz standard, with improvisation (Classically-trained applicants are not required to
    have extensive experience in jazz; they should, however, demonstrate a strong desire to explore this repertoire.)

Jazz-trained applicants:

  1. Three jazz standards: a ballad, a medium swing tune, and an up-tempo tune. Applicants must perform from memory and include improvisation.
  2. One published transcription or previously performed solo that demonstrates advanced skills in interpretation of notated music.
  3. A movement from a classical work such as an etude, sonata, etc. (Jazz-trained applicants are not required to have extensive experience in classical music; they should, however, demonstrate a strong desire to explore this repertoire.)

Opera
Five arias in at least four languages; one piece must be in English.

Opera applicants must submit a prescreening recording online using ArtsApp. The deadline to submit your recording is December 15. Prescreening recordings must adhere to the audition requirements listed above.

  1. A Baroque work, such as a Prelude and Fugue from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, or two sonatas by Scarlatti
  2. A complete classical sonata from the standard repertory
  3. A complete 19th-century work
  4. A work composed after 1920

Undergraduate Diploma

  1. Two movements from a partita, sonata, or suite of J.S. Bach
  2. One movement from a concerto from the standard repertory
  3. One movement or complete short work from the 20th-century

Master of Music/Graduate Performance Diploma

  1. Two movements from a partita, sonata, or suite of J.S. Bach
  2. One movement from a concerto from the standard repertory
  3. Two movements from a sonata in contrasting style to the concerto
  4. One movement or complete short work composed after 1920

Guitar
Undergraduate Diploma

  1. Major and minor scales in all keys (2 octave minimum)
  2. Two studies reflecting fundamental left and right hand techniques such as Brouwer’s Studies 1-10, Sor’s 20 Studies, Giuliani’s Complete Studies, and Carcassi’s Studies and Etudes, Op. 60.
  3. Two selections from the standard repertoire in major and minor keys such as Bach’s Prelude in d- minor BWV 999, Milan’s Pavans, Tarrega’s Lagrima, Dowland’s Melancholy Galliard, J.K. Mertz’s Liebeslied, and Brouwer’s Cancion de Cuna.

Master of Music/Graduate Performance Diploma

  1. Major and minor scales in all keys (2-3 octaves)
  2. Two studies reflecting advanced left and right hand techniques such as Brouwer’s Studies 1-20, Villa-Lobos’s 12 Studies, and Gilardino’s Studies 1-12.
  3. Two selections from advanced repertoire such as Bach’s Prelude, Fugue and Allegro, BWV. 998, Brouwer’s Le Decameron Noir, Villa-Lobos’s 5 Preludes, Castelnuovo Tedesco’s Tarantella, and Albeniz’s Cordoba.

Harp
Undergraduate Diploma

Two works of contrasting styles. Repertoire should be equivalent to Pierne Impromptu-Caprice, Handel Tema con variazioni, Salzedo Chanson dans la nuit (Song in the Night), or Tournier Etude de concert: Au matin. Not more than one transcription is permitted. Auditions are to be performed without an accompanist.

Master of Music/Graduate Performance Diploma 
Candidates should prepare three works of contrasting styles. At least one work should be equivalent to Britten Suite for harp, Fauré Impromptu, or Hindemith Sonata. Not more than one transcription is permitted. Auditions are to be performed without an accompanist.

Three selections (songs or arias), in English and at least one other language

Master of Music/Graduate Performance Diploma
Five selections (songs or arias) consisting of song literature in English and two other languages and one aria from an opera or oratorio

Accompanying Guidelines:

Vocal Performance, Opera, Early Music Voice, and Artist Diploma applicants are required to perform with an accompanist. Longy will provide an accompanist for Vocal Performance, Opera, and Early Music Voice applicants. Artist Diploma applicants must make their arrangements for an accompanist.

Longy will provide singers and instrumentalists for Collaborative Piano auditions. Collaborative Piano applicants are welcome to bring their own singers and instrumentalists but must notify Longy in advance.

Longy will provide a rhythm section for Modern American Music auditions. Modern American Music applicants are welcome to bring their own rhythm section but must notify Longy in advance.

Accompanists are not required for all other auditions. Applicants may choose to bring their own accompanist if they wish but must notify Longy in advance.
