A WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to the Longy School of Music. I hope that these pages will serve as a helpful introduction to the full range of our musical offerings in Continuing Studies. Longy's Continuing Studies program offers lesson, class, and ensemble opportunities to adult avocational students, whether they are taking up the study of music for the first time, reviving a long-dormant interest in an instrument, or furthering their appreciation of music's richness as an expressive medium. In fostering these varied aspirations through outstanding private instruction, innovative coursework, and opportunities for ensemble performance, we nurture individuals as musical practitioners and enthusiasts.
All of this activity is supported by Longy's remarkable faculty-gifted and creative musicians dedicated to the fine art of teaching, serving the distinctive needs of adult students, and communicating the joys of making and sharing music with others
So join us at Longy and experience this marvelous musical education for yourself. I look forward to seeing you in our teaching studios, classrooms, and recital halls.
WHY LONGY? Longy is well-known for its legacy of high-quality, lifelong learning. Students who select Longy faculty to guide their musical studies will receive expert training whether they are serious beginners, passionate amateurs, or advanced performers who want to continue quality lessons while pursuing full-time university studies. Even professional musicians seek lessons with master teachers or advanced conservatory classes for their continued professional development. Conservatory faculty members are deeply committed to teaching students in all divisions of the school and at all levels.

ADVANCED AND SPECIALIZED STUDY Longy offers workshops and short courses throughout the year that are designed as unique, imaginative, and intensive learning experiences. These workshops are designed for music educators and performers (chamber music workshops, choir, and master classes). Experts from our mind/body faculty offer workshops appropriate for musicians and non - musicians who are interested in body alignment, injury prevention, and body awareness.
Public school teachers and private studio teachers may enhance their skills through a variety of short courses and conservatory offerings. For example, classes in string and piano pedagogy and applied teaching methods for wind instruments are valuable for new and experienced teachers. Elementary school teachers benefit from classes in Dalcroze eurhythmics, a creative system of learning musical concepts which uses the body as instrument. It is particularly effective in the teaching of young children.
Qualified Continuing Studies students are eligible to enroll in courses that are offered as part of the Conservatory curriculum, provided they meet all prerequisites and receive permission from the instructor. Please also note that most of these are required courses for matriculated students. Continuing Studies participants will be admitted to classes only if space permits and are expected to participate fully by attending regularly and completing all requisite assignments and exams.
