Event details

Sistema Side by Side, a music program begun in October, 2013, and offered free of charge to participants, has created a different kind of orchestra - one where conservatory graduate students and grade school students share music stands in performance. One where students from communities across Massachusetts come together throughout the year for a series of intensive rehearsals and performances, creating community through playing music together, and working through differences in the pursuit of a common musical goal.

On March 22, Gustavo Dudamel, award-winning Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted the Longy Side by Side orchestra in an open rehearsal of excerpts from Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony. The orchestra comprised 50 children from Sistema programs in Massachusetts, members of the Longy Conservatory Orchestra, and, as special guests for that date only, 10 musicians from Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) – the Los Angeles Philharmonic's initiative inspired by Music Director Gustavo Dudamel's artistic vision and experience in Venezuela's El Sistema.

The open rehearsal with Gustavo Dudamel resulted from a collaboration between Longy, the Celebrity Series of Boston, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
