LIBRARY SERVICES

Information and Reference
Student library assistants can provide help at the circulation desk during all hours of library operation. Library staff are available for reference assistance during most hours of operation except Saturdays. For special assistance with research questions, please arrange for an appointment with the Library Director, Roy Rudolph.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
Items not owned by the Bakalar Library may be requested from another library through interlibrary loan. Faculty and current students may use this service to support course work, teaching, research, and performance at Longy. ILL request forms may be obtained at the circulation desk. Alternatively, contact Catherine Klenov (email: catherine.klenov@longy.edu).

Photocopying
The library has two photocopiers, one located on the lower level, and one located outside the library in the student lounge in the Zabriskie house. Copies are $.15 per page. Frequent users are encouraged to purchase copy cards from the card vendor next to the second floor photocopier. Copies using the card cost only $.10.

BORROWING POLICIES

A current Longy ID or Longy borrowers card is required in order to borrow materials from the library. Borrowing privileges are extended to all Longy faculty, staff and conservatory students.

Community Programs students enrolled in a full set of private lessons (16 weeks) or a student in either the Young Performers Program or Pre-College Academy may apply for a library borrower’s card valid for the current semester. Borrowing privileges will expire at the end of the semester but may be renewed when the student re-registers.

Books and scores circulate to faculty on a semester basis (fall, spring and summer). To support classroom teaching, sound and video recordings may be borrowed for 7 days.

Library Fines
Students, staff and alumni: There is a 3-day grace period following the due date, after which fines accrue at $.25 per day to a maximum of $5.00 per item.  Please note that borrowing privileges are automatically blocked once total charges reach $5.00.

For items more than three months overdue, a replacement fee will be assessed and added to the borrower’s account.  If the item is returned before a replacement has been ordered, this fee will be reimbursed (overdue fines will still be charged). Library fines and fees may be paid by cash or check at the circulation desk.

Faculty: A replacement fee will be assessed for items that are more than three months overdue.  Borrowing privileges are blocked until fee is paid or item is returned.  Replacement fees will be reimbursed if item is returned before a replacement has been ordered.

Requesting audio and audio/visual recordings
The library's collection of audio and audio/visual recordings is currently in storage outside the library. Library desk assistants retrieve requested items three times per day (10 AM, 2 PM and 6 PM). To request a CD or DVD, look up the CD/DVD number in the catalog, fill out an Audio / A/V request slip, and leave it for the library assistant at the desk. Requested CDs will be retrieved and kept at the circulation desk for 1 week (extensions may be requested).  Please note the audio and a/v recordings are for use in the library only.  They may also be brought to classroom for course related activities with permission of library staff.

Chamber Music Group Sign-Out
Student chamber music groups working with a Longy faculty coach may sign out pertinent scores and parts on a semester basis as follows:

  • One member of the ensemble should check out the music for the group and obtain an authorization form at the circulation desk.
  • The faculty coach and each member of the ensemble must sign the form.
  • The form should be returned to the librarian before the original due date.

Course Reserves
Materials placed on reserve for class assignments are kept at the library circulation desk. A list of reserve materials organized by name of instructor is available for consultation at the circulation desk.
