Pacifica Quartet and Longy Showcased in Live Broadcast on WGBH 89.7
"Longy is really special -- it not only coaches chamber musicians but teaches students how to coach," said Simin Ganatra, violinist in the Pacifica Quartet, which appeared with Longy President Karen Zorn on Richard Knisely's one-hour live show on WGBH 89.7, broadcast November 16. To hear Zorn's dynamic vision for Longy and high-energy quartets by Felix Mendelssohn and Paul Hindemith online, click here. In the spring, Pacifica will return to Longy as Visiting Artists in Chamber Music. At Pickman Hall on Thursday, March 27, at 8 pm, they will perform Beethoven's Quartet, op. 18, no. 6, Elliott Carter's Second Quartet and the Dvorak Piano Quintet, op. 81, with guest artist Wayman Chin, chair of Longy's Chamber Music Program. On Friday, April 11, at 7 pm is a first-of-its-kind performance at the Regattabar, an acclaimed jazz club at The Charles Hotel, Cambridge. Watch for details in upcoming editions of music@longy.

Longy Toddler is 'Tigger' in Holiday Hallmark Ad
Nicholas Moy, a 2-year-old in Longy's Dalcroze Eurhythmics class "Movement and Music for Toddlers" has become an overnight TV sensation. He's the bouncy giggly "Tigger" in Hallmark's 2007 holiday commerical (click to view). How it happened? His father, Christopher Moy, a Longy database manager, posted a home video on YouTube of Nicholas in a Tigger costume. Combing through thousands of online videos for possibilities, Hallmark's ad agency fell in love with Nicholas and contracted the segment for an ad campaign. More surprises followed: newspaper articles (Patriot Ledger), scooped up by wire services nationwide, and regional TV news coverage (NECN). What a creative way to help fund a college kitty!

MERRY-MAKING WITH THE GEORGES LONGY CIRCLE
|
|
Opera Sizzlers and Chamber Music Warm Holiday Hearth Braving the cold weather of December 4, Longy's most faithful supporters -- members of the Georges Longy Circle -- stepped into the warmth of four fireplaces ablaze at the Brookline home of Trustee Marilyn Ray Smith and her husband, Charles Freifeld. But that was only a warmup for the "hot" musical treats to follow, as Longy conservatory students from all over the world joined in the festivities. Click here for photo collage of all the musical merry-making.

Edward Goldman '43 Pianist Age 90 and Going Strong
Edward Goldman started his life as a pianist with distinction -- by competing against Leonard Bernstein as a youngster and winning! At 90, he is happy to be one of our oldest living alums. He fondly recalls a Longy class with Nadia Boulanger: "I brought in a composition that sounded romantic, like Tchaikovsky, and she said, 'That's already been written!' I threw it away and got back to work." View full profile.
Ana Catalina Ramirez '04 Clarinetist to Launch Career in Mississippi On January 1, Ana Catalina Ramirez heads to Jackson, Mississippi, to begin a new chapter -- as principal clarinetist of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. A 2004 Longy graduate, Ramirez especially appreciates her clarinet studies with Jonathan Cohler. She'll miss her New England friends but is looking forward to Mississippi's warm temperatures, which is closer to the weather in her home country of Costa Rica. Click here for more details.
