OPEN HOUSE AND INSTRUMENT "PETTING ZOO"Need an introduction to the instruments? Longy's annual "Petting Zoo" is a wonderful opportunity for hands-on exploration of instrument families. Children can, with faculty guidance, learn how instruments work and try making sounds of their own.

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1

Dear Friends,
It is hard to believe that I am embarking on my sixth month as president of this extraordinary institution. It seems fitting that the first edition of music@longy coincides with the many new and exciting developments here on campus.
We now have a robust technology infrastructure to support students and faculty, as well as a larger and highly talented conservatory student body joining our other gifted young musicians this fall. And above all, our dedicated faculty and administrators continue to move the school to new levels of excellence.
I encourage you to experience everything that Longy has to offer-come to a concert, explore our Continuing Studies curriculum, enroll your children in the Preparatory Studies program. Participate in the exciting and vital music community that is Longy.
I look forward to seeing you in the Fall!
Sincerely,
Karen Zorn

INTERNATIONAL TCHAIKOVSKY WINNER
TO STUDY AT LONGY
|
|
Sergey Antonov, a brilliant young Russian cellist and winner of the coveted 13th Annual International Tchaikovsky Competition, will continue his studies at the Longy beginning in September. The competition is one of the world's most prestigious classical music competitions in which young, first-class musicians gather from around the world.
"We are honored to have Sergey Antonov joining us in Cambridge," said Longy President Karen Zorn. "He is one of the most gifted cellists of his generation."
Born in 1983, Sergey Antonov started playing cello at the age of 5. Sergey is a graduate of the Central Music School at the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied with Maria Zhuravleva and Moscow Conservatory where he was a student of Natalia Shakhovskaya. He has made solo appearances with St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Budapest Symphony Orchestras as well as other orchestras throughout Russia. For the past two years, Sergey was a participant of the young composers festival "Young Academies of Russia" which took place in St. Petersburg. His participation in the festival resulted in an offer to record his first CD with a pianist Pavel Raekerus, which was released in 2004 on a "New Classics" Label. The CD includes the works of Rachmaninov and Myaskovsky. In March Sergey has won the First Prize in ASTA National Solo Competition (cello), Detroit (2007).
Antonov, also a student of the distinguished cellist and teacher Terry King, will enter Longy's Graduate Performance Diploma program.
