PACIFICA QUARTET AT FAMED JAZZ BAR
Broadcast Live Online, a Longy 'First'

Capacity crowds are becoming the norm when the acclaimed Pacifica Quartet comes to Longy. On April 11, President Karen Zorn (right in photo) launched "Longy at the Regattabar," showcasing chamber music where you'd least expect it: a jazz bar (read story in Boston Globe). Playing for the first time at the Regattabar, a famed jazz club in Harvard Square, was the Pacifica Quartet, joined by pianist Wayman Chin (far left), chair of chamber music, and four of Longy's top conservatory students (photo highlights). "Longy is daring to be different," said Simin Ganatra, first violinist of Pacifica. Another Longy first: The entire evening was broadcast live online, with 3,650 people logging on to watch the high-voltage performance.
Two weeks beforehand, on March 27, Pacifica's concert at Longy was preceded by a special reception for members of the Georges Longy Circle and other guests (view photos). Composition faculty member Jeremy Van Buskirk described Elliott Carter's second
string quartet, among three pieces played to a sellout audience that evening. During their two spring visits to Longy, the Pacifica Quartet also gave master classes and introduced children from Cambridge's public schools to the dynamic world of playing in a chamber ensemble.

FAMILY SERIES SEASONAL FINALE

'Kitchen Music and Bucket Brigade' Create Musical Fun from Ordinary Things
Kids who attended "Kitchen Music and the Bucket Brigade" at Longy on April 13 went home with ideas for making music with ordinary household items: pots and pans, metal bowls, utensils, and plastic bottles filled with dried beans and rice, shaken percussion style (view photos). Serving up this fun-packed "musical meal" were "chefs" Takaaki Masuko and Matthew Taylor. The Bucket Brigade featured students from the John W. McCormack School, Boston Latin School and the Community Music Center of Boston. This was the fourth and final performance in Longy's 2007-08 Family Series, generously supported by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.

Cellist Matt Haimovitz to Speak to Graduates
Approximately 65 conservatory students will hear the renowned cellist Matt Haimovitz as they graduate May 18 from the many degree-granting programs at Longy. "We are honored to have such an acclaimed artist, who trained with Itzhak Perlman in his youth, speak to our graduates as they reach this exciting milestone," said Robert Shay, dean of the conservatory. Dean Shay also will embark on a new phase of his career as he leaves Longy to become director of the School of Music at the University of Missouri in Columbia. LONGY ALUMNA A SMASH HIT IN JAPAN
|
|
Red Sox Fan to the Max!
Longy alumna Angie Carr '06 wore this clever handmade costume to the opening game of the Boston Red Sox in Japan on March 25. She was featured in a CNN interview and appeared on the front page of the Metro in Tokyo. Carr was a voice major at Longy and received her Masters of Music in 2006. After graduating, she moved to Okinawa, Japan, where she works as the music minister/associate pastor for the Keystone Church of the Nazarene. When our Alumni Relations office received the photo, we sponsored a contest to identify the mystery alum. The first alum to respond was Eva Kendrick '06, who was thrilled to get a new Longy tote bag for her sleuthing efforts. For more alumni happenings, click here.
