LONGY YOUTH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
|
|
After Family Series and Petting Zoo, Next Stop New York City The Longy Youth Chamber Orchestra, youngsters who take music lessons in Longy's Preparatory division, gave a stellar performance in Longy's Family Series concert on February 3. Under the baton of exuberant conductor George Ogata, each instrument was introduced (photo highlights). Featured soloists were Winston Huang, age 12, who played a Beethoven piano concerto with breathtaking virtuosity, and cellist Sophie Applbaum, age 10, who displayed musical maturity well beyond her years in a J.C. Bach concerto. The ever-popular "Instrument Petting Zoo" followed.
Next stop for this world-traveling orchestra and other select chamber music ensembles: Merkin Concert Hall, Kaufman Center, New York City, February 17, 4 pm (free admission); works by Hummel, Saint-Saens, Spohr, Dvorak and Beethoven.

ASHLEY HALL '07 From Longy to China and India When Ashley Hall won the third trumpet position with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, she never imagined the international pathway ahead. Last year after completing her studies at Longy, she toured China. And this spring she's traveling to India to work with orphaned children. She credits Longy, which "helps students discover that being a musician is so
much more than sitting alone in a practice room for hours each day or
performing on a stage and failing to connect with the audience in front
of you." Read more about this trumpeter who's having a blast, making a difference in the world.

Career Seminars Off and Running On January 31, more than 25 Longy students and alumni attended the first in a series of career seminars co-hosted by Alumni Relations and Academic Affairs. Titled "Making a Career in Music," the discussion was led by (photo, left to right) Longy President Karen Zorn, Richard Cornell '72, Angela Myles Beeching, Director of Career Services Center at New England Conservatory, Lisa DeSiro '01 and Eric Bronner '03. Next seminar, February 21: "Taxes for Musicians," 6 pm, Michael Moriarty, CPA, Room N-1, 33 Garden St., Cambridge. more info

WOOD HAND-CRAFTED MUSIC STAND
|
|
From the Heart and Hands of a Father Longy has received an extraordinary gift: a hand-crafted music stand, expertly made by Roy Chaleff, father of Alexander Chaleff, who is pursuing his master's degree at Longy with the assistance of a scholarship. "Although, regrettably, I am unable to show my gratitude to Longy by means of a monetary donation," wrote Roy, "I have crafted a music stand that I would like to present as a gift to the school as a gesture of appreciation." The elegant maple-walnut-brass stand was presented at Alexander's recital, February 5, attended by his family, of Pennington, NJ. In photo: Deborah (mother), violinist Alexander and Roy Chaleff (father). Alexander's faculty mentor at Longy is Malcolm Lowe, (view bio) concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
