JANUARY 2008
VOLUME 2, ISSUE 1
Karen ZornNew Year Energized by Gifts
As Longy's exciting 2008 events get underway, I want to thank everyone for their response to our year-end fundraising appeal. Among highlights: The average donation jumped more than 25% to nearly $250, while the associated costs of reaching our supporters dropped by 37%.

We received many first-time donations, several through our new
online service. In recent months, 10 new members joined the Georges Longy Circle, growing to nearly 175 people who support Longy at the $1,000 level or higher. Our annual fund passed the halfway point toward this year's goal of $800,000. These much-needed funds go to scholarships, outreach programs for underserved populations, instrument upkeep, free concerts and much more. I deeply appreciate your gift of music to Longy.

ADULT CLASSES START JANUARY 28
Continuing StudiesWhy Should Kids
Have All the Fun?
Maybe you've always wanted to to learn piano, violin or trumpet...sing in a group...play in an ensemble (chamber music, jazz, early music and more) matched to your ability level (beginner, intermediate, advanced). It's time to dust off that flute buried in your closet since high school. Longy offers a wide array of music courses for adults through our Continuing Studies program. Classes for the spring term begin January 28. For registration or more info, contact Karen Burciaga, 617.876.0956 x532.
NEW ALUMNI SEMINARS AND FOCUS GROUPS
Office of Alumni RelationsTips on
Musical Careers, Marketing, Taxes

Can you make a living as a musician? Does tax time make you uneasy? How can you get noticed in the music marketplace? Longy alumni and conservatory students are invited to a new seminar series. The first: "Making a Career in Music," led by successful Longy graduates, Thursday, January 31, at 6 pm, Pickman Concert Hall, 27 Garden Street, Cambridge.

Brainstorming Sessions for Alumni
What services would help you? What should an alumni reunion look like? What social activities would you enjoy? Let us know by coming to our 2008 alumni focus groups, beginning Sunday, February 3, at 4 pm, Recital Room N-1, 33 Garden Street, Cambridge. For more info on all alumni events, contact Sarah Glenn, 617.876.0956 x651.
A FOND FAREWELL
Harvard Professor Passionate about Music
Longy has lost a long-time friend and music enthusiast, John R. Pappenheimer, who died in December at age 92. A world-renowned biology professor at Harvard University, Dr. Pappenheimer was a member of the prestigious Georges Longy Circle. As reported in The Boston Globe, "Apart from his work, he had a passion for music, and quartets in particular," said his daughter, Rosamond Zimmerman of Lexington. "He played the cello and was playing right up to the very end. In fact, even when he was in rehab, he had a date with two Longy students to play some Schubert."
