2008 Commencement Celebrating a Musical Milestone Dancing a jig was only part of the day's celebration, as the Class of 2008 at Longy School of Music came together to take a final bow at commencement exercises on May 18. Bach solo and gave the class a rousing sendoff: "Be creative,

TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Robert Willoughby, Renowned Flutist, Receives Esteemed Teaching Award Robert Willoughby (right), whose far-reaching influence on the tradition of flute playing has inspired musicians around the globe, received the 2008 George Seaman Excellence in the Art of Teaching award from Longy School of Music. "This accolade recognizes a faculty member whose talents both as a teacher and in service to the school have been outstanding," said Longy President Karen Zorn (left), presenting Willoughby the award at commencement exercises on May 18. Read more about the award and career accomplishments of this outstanding performer and educator, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996 from the National Flute Association and joined the Longy faculty in 1997.

Wayman Chin at Helm of Conservatory
Widely recognized for creating novel ways to
showcase chamber music to new audiences, Wayman Chin, the chair of Chamber Music at Longy, has been named dean of Longy
School of Music's renowned Conservatory (read more). "His creative energy is extraordinary," said Longy President Karen
Zorn. "Wayman's artistic
abilities, combined with his teaching and
administrative experience in higher education, will enhance our ongoing ability to attract talented
musicians from around the world." Chin was both the inspiration and pianist for the recent first-time event "Longy at the Regattabar" (view concert online).

CELEBRATING JOSEPH L. HORNER

Memorial Service for Devoted Trustee and Chamber Musician Friends of Joseph L. Horner are cordially invited to a memorial service to celebrate the life of this extraordinary man, who died in March. It will be held Sunday, June 22, at 12 pm, Longy School of Music, 27 Garden St., Cambridge, with a reception to follow. Joe Horner was a dedicated trustee of the school, accomplished violinist, ardent concertgoer and active chamber musician. A scholarship fund is being established at Longy in his name to support talented young musicians.
