NEW FACULTY AND STAFF
Michael WayneMichael Wayne
Woodwinds and Brass Department
A prominent new member of Longy's Conservatory faculty is clarinetist Michael Wayne, who joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2008. He previously was principal clarinet of the Kansas City Symphony and a member of the Grand Teton Festival Orchestra. He has been a visiting professor of clarinet at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and has given master classes across the country. Michael Wayne made his Carnegie Hall debut with the world premiere of the Michael Daugherty Clarinet Concerto. He completed his studies at the Interlochen Arts Academy and University of Michigan, where his teachers included Richard Hawkins and Fred Ormand.

Miriam EckelhoeferMiriam Eckelhoefer
Director of Community Programs
Heading our community programs (Preparatory and Continuing Studies) is Miriam Eckelhoefer, who has taught at various organizations including the Neighborhood Music School, where she has maintained an extensive studio teaching both cello and chamber music. She is a doctoral candidate at Stony Brook University and previously studied at the University of Notre Dame and Yale University. Eckelhoefer co-founded Elm City ChamberFest and has performed at festivals throughout the United Sates, Canada, England, France, Italy and Holland. She is a member of the New Haven Symphony and has performed with chamber music groups including the Acadia Trio and Ardesco, a contemporary music ensemble. A welcome reception hosted by President Karen Zorn will be held Saturday, September 20, 10-11 am and 2-3 pm in the lobby of the Zabriskie Buiiding.

Alex PowellAlex Powell
Director of Admissions and Student Services
The newest addition to our Academic Affairs staff is Alex Powell, who will be actively recruiting students from around the world to our Conservatory. He holds a bachelor's degree, with majors in history and music, from the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Music degree, in voice, from Belmont University. He most recently earned his Graduate Diploma in voice from New England Conservatory as a student of Vinson Cole, and in 2007 earned a Performer's Certificate for summer study at the Franz Schubert Institut in Austria, where he worked with eminent artists such as Elly Ameling and Julius Drake. Coming from a family of teachers, Powell is a passionate advocate for education. His professional experience includes working as a research coordinator at Vanderbilt University and an admissions counselor at New England Conservatory. At present, he is a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate in Boston University's program in Music Education.  



LONGY NEWSMAKERS
Firebird Ensemble to Play at Longy
The Firebird Ensemble will present a "genre-busting" concert titled "Torrid Nature Scene" at Longy on Monday, October 6, at 8 pm. Directing the ensemble is violist Kate Vincent, a member of Longy's Composition and Theory Department, who also co-directs our school's new-music ensemble, Longitude. The high-flying, 12-member Firebird Ensemble is known for its varied contemporary repertoire, virtuosic performances and wide audience appeal. For more information and concert tickets, click here.

A Far Cry2008 Grad to Record with Natalie Merchant
Alumna Rachel Cama-Lekx, a viola da gamba player who received a Graduate Performance Diploma from Longy in 2008, has been invited to record with singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant on a portion of the artist's latest album. Cama-Lekx currently is based in Cleveland, where she is a doctoral candidate at Case Western Reserve University (more).
