George Seaman Award for excellence in teaching
Cambridge, Mass. — Nominations are now being accepted for the George Seaman Award, established in 2003 in memory of esteemed past Longy faculty member, George Seaman (1943–2003). Seaman served on the Longy cello faculty, teaching both Conservatory and Preparatory students. He was the beloved teacher and mentor of many cellists, a highly esteemed colleague and a cherished part of the Longy community. He also taught in the Project STEP Program and at Phillips Academy in Andover. He was the principal cellist of the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra and the Boston Lyric Opera Orchestra, and was a member of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra.
About the award
The George Seaman Award is given to a faculty member from any of Longy School of Music's divisions: Preparatory, Continuing or Conservatory (administrative and visiting faculty members are not eligible). The award celebrates the Longy faculty's devotion to students, artistry and originality; its ability to inspire students' growth; and its dynamic involvement in life at the school as embodied in the example and memory of George Seaman. This year’s award will be presented at the school's graduation ceremony on May 18, 2008.

Dedication and commitment to students and the art of teaching
Excellence of teaching and the ability to motivate students' growth
Inspiration to students and fellow faculty members
Upholding a model of lifelong learning
Nomination process
A Longy School of Music faculty member will qualify as a nominee for this important award after three (3) letters of recommendation have been presented to the Longy Faculty Committee (LFC). These letters may come from students, parents of students or fellow faculty members. The letters may be mailed to the Longy Faculty Committee, Longy School of Music, One Follen St., Cambridge, MA 02138; hand-delivered to the LFC mailbox; or submitted by e-mail to
