Longy’s March and Late February Concerts and Special Events

All concerts take place at Longy’s Edward M. Pickman Concert Hall, 27 Garden Street, Cambridge (Harvard Square) unless otherwise noted. Many are free. For a complete schedule, more details and updates, see Longy’s online concert calendar.

Thursday, Feb. 25, 8pm
Longy's Composition Department presents
Longitude New Music Ensemble

Longy’s premiere new music ensemble is dedicated to 20th and 21st century chamber works and  is under the artistic direction of Longy faculty members Paul Brust and David Russell.
Longitude New Music Ensemble presents world premières of the Longitude Commissioning Project winners Greg Clark (psi) and Kwaumane Brown (Category 5 or How Katrina Managed to Break My Heart). The concert also features Aaron Copland’s Quartet for Piano and Strings, Barbara Kolb’s Umbrian Colors (for Violin and Guitar) and Witold Lutoslawski’s Dance Preludes.

Hypermusic Prologue 
Hector Parra of the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique in Paris
Hypermusic Prologue is a unique project for intercommunication between science, music and art. The opera libretto was written by the prestigious theoretical physicist Lisa Randall of Harvard who is a member of Longy's Board of Visitors. The work has been described as "one of the great achievements of European contemporary music in this century."

An exciting performance of Tango music and dance featuring music of Astor Piazzolla, Kurt Weill and John McDonald's "Three Cruel Tangos" for originally for soprano and orchestra recomposed for chamber ensemble for this concert.

The public is invited to observe this one-hour tango lesson taught by Argentinian dancers Herman Brizuela and Maria Ybarra in Longy’s Pickman Hall.

Master Class and Lecture by Eduard Schmieder, violin
Master Class,

Lecture, “Russian Schools of Violin Playing,” 1-3pm, Wolfinsohn Room
Sponsored by Longy’s String Department
Born and educated in Russia, Eduard Schmieder has been characterized as an “extraordinary musician of the late 20th century.” One of the most highly regarded violin pedagogues of his generation, he is the Carnell Distinguished Professor of Violin at Temple University in Philadelphia. His afternoon talk is part of Longy’s String Teacher Training classes.

Featuring premier of "Carmencita,"
by Lewis Krauthamer, Winner of Longy's Sixth Annual String Composition Competition

This concert celebrates the continuity of classical music as each generation passes on its traditions and the joy of music-making to the next, with teacher and student playing together. The competition, jointly sponsored by Longy's String Department and Composition and Theory Department, fosters the creation of new music playable by young musicians. This year's winner, Lewis Krauthamer, a 2004 Longy graduate, won for his composition, Carmencita, which will be premiered at this concert.
