Cambridge, MA – Piano virtuoso Andrius Zlabys takes the stage at Longy School of Music on October 16, 2010, launching the school’s yearlong Unique Voices series.

The Lithuanian-born Zlabys has been hailed as “one of the most gifted young keyboard artists to emerge in years” (Chicago Tribune). His work has been described as “tasteful, communicative, and utterly absorbing” (New York Times), “bracing and exhilarating” (Philadelphia Inquirer), and “contemplative and mesmerizing” (Los Angeles Times). In 2003, Zlabys’s recording of Enesco’s Piano Quintet for Nonesuch in collaboration with violinist Gidon Kremer received a Grammy Award nomination.

Zlabys’s concert will take place on Saturday, October 16 at 8 pm in Longy’s Edward M. Pickman Concert Hall, 27 Garden Street, Cambridge. (617.876.0956, www.longy.edu) Tickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors. Free tickets are available for the media.

Works to be performed include Bach’s Partita No. 6 in E minor, Debussy’s Suite Bergamasque, Sharlat’s Chaconne, and Liszt’s Sonata in B minor.

Zlabys will be the first of three performers in this year’s Unique Voices series, which features concerts and teaching residences by extraordinary musicians ranging from established masters to promising younger artists. Launched in 2008, the series was established through the generosity of Jane and Neil Pappalardo.

In addition to Zlabys, this year’s Unique Voices line-up includes:

  • Friday, December 3, 2010: Vibraphonist, composer, and bandleader Stefon Harris and his Blackout Band perform music from their Grammy-nominated CD Urbanus.

  • Saturday, February 12, 2011:  Martin Katz—the “Dean of Collaborative Pianists”—performs works by Beethoven, Schumann, and a premiere by Tom Cipullo with baritone Jesse Blumberg.

  • Sunday, March 27, 2011: Pianist Martin Katz returns, with clarinetist Michael Wayne and cellist Mihail Jojatu, performing works by Poulenc and Brahms.
