Cambridge, MA – Hailed as “one of the most important young artists in jazz” by the Los Angeles Times, vibraphonist Stefon Harris will perform with his band Blackout on Saturday, December 4, 2010.

A four-time Grammy nominee and six-time Best Mallet Player by the Jazz Journalist, Stefon Harris has performed throughout North America and Australia, from New York’s Lincoln Center to the Sydney Opera House. On Saturday, December 4th at 8:00pm, Harris and Blackout will be taking the stage at Longy School of Music’s Edward M. Pickman Hall and performing works from their Grammy-nominated CD Urbanus.

Featuring a hybrid of acoustic music and progressive sounds, Stefon Harris and Blackout’s second recording Urbanus showcases adventurous takes on pieces by George Gershwin and Stevie Wonder to the Jackie McLean cover Minor March which combines hip-hop beats with jazz and funk. Harris and Blackout will bring a program with “plenty of cross-over potential and all-ages appeal” (All About Jazz) to Longy School of Music. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors. Free tickets are available for the media.

Launched in 2008, the Unique Voices Series is generously funded by longtime Longy supporters Jane and Neil Pappalardo. This concert and residency series brings performers of exceptional caliber to Longy for concerts and recitals. These artists also interact with our students in master classes and coaching sessions, helping talented musicians of all ages develop performance skills.

The 2010–2011 Unique Voices Series will continue in the spring with a residency by collaborative pianist Martin Katz.

  • Saturday, February 12, 2011: Martin Katz—the “Dean of Collaborative Pianists” performs works by Beethoven, Schumann and a premiere by Tom Cipullo with baritone Jesse Blumberg.

  • Sunday, March 27, 2011: Pianist Martin Katz returns, with clarinetist Michael Wayne and cellist Mihail Jojatu, performing works by Poulenc and Brahms.
