Solo Performance Opportunities
Students who register for private lessons will have the full advantage of being part of a peer group through their teacher's studio, as well as through other class and ensemble studies offered at Longy.
Performance goals can be achieved throughout the year in a wide variety of settings:
- Preparatory assemblies are scheduled on Saturday mornings and afternoons at 11:00 AM and 1:00 pm. Please check the “Preparatory Assemblies” sign-in book at the front desk of Zabriskie House (27 Garden St.) for times and availability.
- Saturday afternoon recitals and evening recitals are opportunities for students who are ready to offer the most polished performances. These are scheduled in Pickman Concert Hall on designated dates. Please check the “Musical Afternoons” sign-in book at the front desk of Zabriskie House (27 Garden St.) for times and availability.
- Musical Evenings are scheduled throughout the year on Wednesday evenings, and are open to all students-preparatory, continuing studies, and conservatory students-with recommendation of their teachers. These are held in the intimate setting of the Wolfinsohn Room. Please check the “Musical Evenings” sign-in book at the front desk of Zabriskie House (27 Garden St.) for times and availability.
- Departmental recitals are open to all Longy students, and are scheduled by department chairs.
- Departmental master classes are held periodically, and advanced students may participate with recommendation of teacher and department chair. Some recent guests artists have been world-renowned violinist Pamela Frank, pianist Joel Fan, and cellist Matt Haimovitz.
- Young Performers Certificate Program students are offered a special recital series in Pickman Concert Hall as an opportunity to fulfill their performance requirements..
- Winners of the annual Concerto Competition in both the junior and senior category are invited to perform with the Longy Youth Chamber Orchestra.

Performance Evaluations
A panel of faculty members will provide written evaluations of the student's (enrolled in private lessons) current level of playing. Evaluations are a valuable tool for students to receive feedback on their playing while providing an incentive to make substantial progress during the year. Performance evaluations will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2012.
Attendance Requirements for Performing Ensembles
Attendance is mandatory at every scheduled class, rehearsal, dress rehearsal, and concert of our large and small performing ensembles. Students must call the Preparatory Studies Office before the scheduled class to inform them of absence due to illness. All other absences will be considered unexcused unless prior permission is given by the instructor. If unexcused absences accumulate, the student will not be allowed to participate in the ensemble.

LONGY PREPARATORY DIVISION
2011-12 ANNUAL CONCERTO COMPETITION
Junior & Senior Divisions
- Sunday, October 30, 2011: Preliminaries
- Sunday, November 6, 2011: Final Round
Guidelines
Please note the important deadlines and dates for the 2011-2012 Concerto Competition:
- Saturday, September 3rd application forms available
- Saturday, October 15th all completed application forms due in the Preparatory Office
- Sunday, October 30, 2011 beginning at 9:00am, Preliminaries in Pickman Concert Hall
- Sunday, November 6th beginning at 10:00am, Finals in Pickman Concert Hall
Competition Guidelines:
- The competition is open only to students currently enrolled in private instrumental or vocal lessons at Longy. In addition, winners performing with the orchestra must be enrolled in lessons at Longy at the time of the performance.
- The competition consists of two divisions. The Junior Division includes students up to age 14 (as of November 1). The Senior Division includes students age 15-18.
- There can be up to three winners in each division, but only the first place winner performs with orchestra.
- The Senior Division first place winner performs with the Longy Youth Chamber Orchestra. (Date TBA)
- The Junior Division first place winner performs with the Longy Youth Chamber Orchestra in the Family Series concerts. (Date TBA)
The winners are not permitted to compete in the same division of competition in the following school year.
Repertoire:
- All repertoire must be approved by the LYCO conductor, George Ogata. Some restrictions may apply to prevent the repetition of previously performed winning repertoire.
- All repertoire MUST be memorized and performed with an accompanist. The fee for the accompanist is not covered by Longy. (A list of qualified pianists will be available on the Prep bulletin board but financial arrangements must be made directly between the families and the accompanist.)
- The movements selected for the preliminary and final rounds must reflect the proposed actual performance (e.g. if all three movements are to be performed, the audition must include selected –determined by the jury—from all three movements.) If students advance to the Final Round, they must play the piece as they wish to perform it with the orchestra, should they win, in its entirety. Please note that Senior Division competitors must prepare a COMPLETE concerto.
- The repertoire is not limited to the instrumental concerto. Other forms are also appropriate, e.g. vocal arias, concert pieces. Double, triple concertos, etc. are also acceptable. If two or more students are performing together, they must compete in the senior division if any participant is 15 or older.
- The final decisions concerning the number of movements and length of the final performance will be made by the conductor and large ensemble chair.
Additional information:
The auditions are open to the public. Taping of the entire event is not permitted, and photography is not permitted.
The visitors are asked to exit the audition room promptly following the last contestant so that the adjudicators can proceed with their deliberations.
Appropriate concert attire is required both for the auditions and the final performance.
