Welcome to the Longy School of Music . I hope that these pages will serve as a helpful introduction to the breadth of our musical offerings in Preparatory Studies. Longy's Preparatory Studies program offers private instruction, coursework, and large and small ensemble opportunities to young people, whether they are beginning a lifelong relationship with music or moving towards an adult understanding of its richness as an expressive medium. We offer courses ranging from music and movement classes for toddlers and their parents to advanced musical study in our Young Performers Certificate Program, including a distinctive and challenging theory program for students ages 8 to 18.
All of this activity is supported by Longy's remarkable faculty - gifted and creative musicians dedicated to the fine art of teaching, to serving the distinctive needs of younger students, and to communicating the joys of making and sharing music with others.
So join us at Longy and experience this marvelous musical education for yourself. I look forward to seeing you in our teaching studios, classrooms, and recital halls.
Longy School of Music - Preparatory Studies Longy's Preparatory curriculum, serving students ages 12 months to 18 years, is carefully designed to provide enjoyable musical experiences and thorough musical training at all levels. Longy's experienced faculty combines the highest professional skill with an intimate, nurturing environment. A curriculum combining private lessons with music and movement, creative music theory classes, chamber music, orchestra, or chorus can be tailored to each student. The special Young Performers Certificate Program offers comprehensive training for young musicians.
How to Enroll
The Age Chart for Courses & Ensembles gives an overview of age guidelines for our offerings. Eurhythmics classes do not require a personal placement procedure. Simply follow the registration procedures for the age appropriate class (see p. 52) of the Preparatory Catalog. Classes and ensembles which require special auditions or placement procedures are clearly noted.
Private Lesson Placement Private (studio) lessons are offered at all levels. Interested students will be auditioned by the department chair who oversees the desired instrument. (Beginners will be scheduled for a personal interview.) The department chair will consider the age, level, scheduling needs, and learning style of each student in order to make the appropriate teacher assignment. A semester of lessons is 15 weeks. The teacher and family will decide on the appropriate length of lesson (30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes) for the age and level.
Suzuki Program Placement Families who wish to enroll in the Suzuki program (for violin, viola, or cello) should contact Lisa Lederer, the program director. Requests can be made by calling the office at 617.876.0956 x650 .
Class and Ensemble Placement Placements for theory classes, choruses, and chamber ensembles will be held on Saturday, September 8. There is an audition fee of $25 ($10 for returning students) for all instrumental ensembles.
