Preparatory Studies: General Information
Director’s Welcome
Welcome to the Community Division at the Longy School of Music, one of New England’s renowned music teaching institutions. For over 93 years, Longy has thrived on transmitting the joy of music making while cultivating a standard of excellence to students of all ages in the Greater Boston area.
I would like to share with you some of the exciting programs and classes Longy has to offer taught by our distinguished and dedicated faculty. It is our goal to reach out to students of all ages and abilities and welcome them to the Longy family.
Our Preparatory Studies program includes courses ranging from music and movement classes for toddlers and their parents, private instruction, a distinguished theory program, both large and small ensembles. For the more serious and dedicated young musicians we have the Young Performers Program that provides superb musical training and performing experience, and prepares students for a lifetime of involvement in music and the arts.
Because we believe that music is a life-long experience, our educational programs continue for adults. Our Continuing Studies program offers a wide variety of classes for adults either exploring music for the first time, or renewing their passion for music. In addition we are proud to be a part of the Creative Aging movement by offering classes such as Singing for Seniors and Dalcroze for Seniors classes that are having a tremendous impact on students, not only enriching their musicality and creativity but improving the quality of their lives as well.
We look forward to seeing you at Longy!
Sincerely,
Miriam Eckelhoefer

HOW TO ENROLL
The Age Chart for Courses & Ensembles gives an overview of age guidelines for our offerings. Eurhythmics classes do not require a personal placement procedure. Simply follow the registration procedures for the age appropriate class.. Classes and ensembles which require special auditions or placement procedures are clearly noted.
Private Lesson Placement
Private lessons are offered on all instruments and at all levels. Excellent string training is available through traditional study or through the Suzuki program. The private teacher will guide students in their solo studies and advise on preparation for participation in ensembles. Beginning Piano Classes and Eurhythmics Plus Classes are excellent preparation for private study.
It is recommended that vocal students wait until age 14, when the voice matures. In the meantime, students may take advantage of the chorus program, which offers a sound approach to readiness for private training or our Introduction to Vocal lessons. Basic musicianship (theory) and piano studies are also recommended.
A semester of lessons is 16 weeks. The teacher and family will decide on the appropriate length of lesson (30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes) for the age and level. Lessons may take place Monday– Saturday, depending on teacher availability, Longy offers a variety of special discounts—some specifically for students enrolled in private lessons. Please see our registration policies for more information.
Suzuki Program Placement
Families who wish to enroll in the Suzuki program (for violin, viola, or cello) should contact the Community Programs Office at 617.876.0956 x1650.
Ensemble Auditions & Placement
Placements for theory classes, choruses, and chamber ensembles will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2009. There is an audition fee of $25 for all students new to Longy, $10 for current Longy students wishing to advance to a higher level For a complete list of audition requirements and ensembles, Click here for a 2010-2011 Audition Application Form.
