Preparatory Studies: Instrumental & Vocal Classes

The following classes are offered to beginning students who wish to try
instrumental study in a group setting. There are also performance classes for more
advanced students, with an audition requirement.
Group Lessons

Group lessons are a fun and interactive way for children to learn to play an instrument in a relaxed and supportive environment. Piano or guitar lessons can be arranged for 2-4 students according to age and level of playing. Other instruments may be possible depending on demand.

Viola for Violinists

Meets: Saturdays, 11:00-11:55 AM
This class is geared for violinists of intermediate
level and above to broaden their musical horizons
by learning the skills needed to play viola. The
emphasis will be on developing proficiency with
alto clef, and learning to adapt bow and left hand
techniques to viola playing. Students will have
the opportunity to sample the standard solo viola
repertoire as well as chamber music repertoire.
Recommendation of one’s studio teacher is
required. Admission with permission of
instructor. Suggested ages 10–18.
Group Percussion Class (Ages 9-12)

Students will explore a variety of percussion instruments in a small group setting. Class repertoire includes music from Bach to Bartok and the world of Mexican, African and jazz music. This is a great introduction to the world of percussion instruments and will help prepare your child for private percussion lessons.
Sight-Reading for Strings

Open to intermediate and advanced string players, ages 12-18. Discover and develop the skills and tools of sight-reading through solo, chamber and orchestral repertoire. Students will learn to see notes in groups, sequences, patterns, phrases, and combine notes and rhythms while maintaining a steady pulse.

Designed for advanced pianists who wish to deepen their musical experience through the art of accompaniment. Students taking this class will gain hands on experience working as an accompanist.

Trumpet Technique

Meets: Bi-weekly beginning Monday, September 25th and March 5th 6:00-8:00 PM
This class is open to all trumpet students ages 12�adult. Students of all levels welcome. Topics will include trumpet literature, performance etiquette, practice strategies and ensemble playing. There will be performance opportunities throughout the semester.
Group Lesson I for Singers
Ages 8–11
Singers explore the basics of posture and breathing while they develop the necessary skills to become singing musicians. Participants will further develop a deeper sense of pitch and rhythm, learn to sight read and explore songs in a group lesson setting.

Group Lesson II for Singers
Ages 12–13
Singers prepare for private lessons in a group setting, exploring the basics of posture and breathing as they develop the necessary skills to become singing musicians. Participants will master singers skills such as note reading, sight reading, and diction as they prepare solo and ensemble songs for performance.

Singer Skills: Sight-reading and Introduction to Piano
This is a practical course aimed to help singers improve their note reading, sight reading and basic piano skills that will help participants sight read in auditions, learn music quickly for call backs and become more fluent musicians in general. Students enrolled in private lessons at Longy will receive a $35 discount for the class.

PERFORMANCE CLASSES
For many musicians, performance is the most exciting element of studying music. As with all aspects in music, performing is a skill that requires practice. Longy offers a unique series of performance classes open to students of all instruments and ages. These performance classes are designed to help students develop confidence and stage presence in a supportive environment. In addition to focusing on performance skills in a traditional setting, students will also be exposed to non-traditional workshops aimed at developing their sense of communication with the audience and building confidence while performing. Students are divided primarily by age and level and each class is tailored to the students at that level.
Beginning Performance Workshop Series

This class is recommended for students up to age 12 and only meets four times per semester (dates TBA). It is a great introduction to the performance class workshops and an ideal setting for students to work on their performance skills. Recommended for YP Level I.
Intermediate Performance Class

For students ages 11-14 or recommended for YP level II. For students of all instruments, this class meets weekly and students will have the opportunity to work on their performance skills on their instrument as well as in interactive workshops away from their instrument.
Young Artist Performance Class

Meets: Saturdays, 3:00–3:55 PM
For students ages 14 and up or for students in the YP level III or IV. This class is for advanced students who are working towards improving their performance skills. Students will have the opportunity to come together with their peers for master classes with leading teachers and workshops that focus on special topics such as acting and presentation skills for musicians, preparing for auditions, body awareness, improvisation, and world music. The group will also break down in smaller sections for specific sessions for singers, winds, strings, brass, and pianists.
