Register OnlinePreparatory Studies: Suzuki String Training

2011-2012

SUZUKI PROGRAM

Children age 4 and older may begin their study of the violin, viola, or cello according to the principles developed by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki.

Children learn at their own pace in a nurturing environment. Parents participate fully in the learning process by attending all lessons and classes and supervising home practice. In addition to weekly private lessons, the ensemble class gives students the opportunity to solidify their playing skills and to raise their performance levels through review. They are introduced to note reading as well as ensemble and solo playing.

Enrollment in the ensemble class is required for all students in the program. Entrance to the Suzuki Ensemble class for students who do not take their lessons at Longy is at the discretion of the Director of the Suzuki Program.

Longy’s Suzuki Program for children is unique, offering not only instrumental study in individual and group settings, but also beginning classes in Dalcroze Eurhythmics. These classes, known as Music and Movement, teach the child to hear, express, and understand rhythm and melody – the language of music – using the body as musical instrument. The Music and Movement classes provide children with a solid musical foundation, which
helps them prepare for the challenges of playing an instrument.

First-year Suzuki students are required to enroll in the following combination: 30-minute private lesson, 45-minute ensemble class, and 30-minute Music and Movement class. Longy’s Suzuki teachers are trained and registered through the Suzuki Association of the Americas.
