COMPOSITION AND THEORY

HOW TO READ MUSIC

A basic class for those who have never really learned or those who need to refresh their studies from long ago. Pitches, rhythm, musical signs and notations are covered. Students will work from a workbook, and homework will be assigned. The material will fit into any musician's knowledge but is specifically geared to singers in the Voice Class. No prerequisites! Ages 15 and up.

For adults with some musical experience and knowledge of notation, this class solidifies knowledge of scales and intervals and introduces chords in major and minor keys and their inversions.  The course integrates ear training, keyboard harmony, and performance issues into a discussion of the ingredients of chord progressions.

INTRODUCTION TO MIDI AND SEQUENCING

This course introduces students to computer music by covering technical information about MIDI protocol, sequencing, and control. It will allow significant time for "hands-on" work with the instructor to solve technical problems encountered by the student. Students will be required to spend about four hours per week in the studio alone and by the end of the course will produce a small project to demonstrate knowledge of techniques covered in class.

This course immerses students in the world of digital audio. Technical information about digital audio, hard disk recording techniques, and basic approaches to synthesis will be covered. LONGY COMPUTER MUSIC GROUP - SUMMER WORKSHOPS
Sound Synthesis and Digital Processing with Csound and Supercollider

The Longy Computer Music Group is open to anyone interested in learning and sharing new sounds, techniques, and concepts in computer music.  This summer’s workshops will feature sound synthesis and digital processing techniques focusing on the freely available Csound and Supercollider software packages.  The weekly workshops will cover multiple topics including an introduction to Supercollider, creating interactive audio processes, and computer assisted composition.  The workshops are designed for people of all experience levels.  A laptop computer with Csound and Supercollider installed would be helpful for workshop participation, but this is not mandatory.  Please contact Jeremy Van Buskirk at for more information.

CHAMBER MUSIC ENSEMBLES

Chamber ensembles provide a unique opportunity to experience the joys of making music with others.  Students will schedule 4 2-hour sessions.  One hour will be coached and the second hour will be a rehearsal.  At more basic levels, students will be taught how to rehearse on their own, and to make their rehearsals productive.  More advanced groups will be able to explore the music on their own, continuing to develop their skills.  With instructor approval, additional coachings may be arranged with the registrar. Groups will be encouraged to give an informal performance

EARLY MUSIC + DANCE

INTRODUCTION TO FIGURED BASS

Creating a continuo part from a figured bass is one of the most satisfying challenges in music. Designed for those with basic keyboard harmony skills, this course also covers improvisation on a bass line in several styles. Open to all musicians at an intermediate level.

An intensive workshop in early dance, with emphasis on baroque dance but also including a daily late-renaissance dance class. Intended for experienced dancers with a serious interest in early dance, the workshop will include classes in technique, repertoire, and dance notation, with opportunities for independent projects and performance. This year's workshop will focus on dances in the Roussau manuscript, and will run concurrently with the International Baroque Institute at Longy (IBIL), allowing the possibility of joint performances with IBIL students.

This course, required for all students enrolled in Longy's Master of Music program, prepares participants to work with the tools of a music research library and acquire the skills for becoming more knowledgeable performers. Participants will construct outlines, give oral presentations, and write one full-length research paper. Classes will meet for 12 two-hour sessions, to be arranged by the instructor.  Requires at least 3 hours of library research outside of class.

MODERN AMERICAN MUSIC + JAZZ

SMALL JAZZ ENSEMBLES

Ensembles will be established according to instrumental category and ability, and will emphasize the development of improvisational skills. Repertory will consist of jazz standards and Real Book tunes. Students will also have the opportunity to explore Brazilian musical styles and the "free jazz standards" of the avant-garde composers. There will be a concert performance at the end of the summer session.

PIANO

PIANO DUO: Four Hands are better than Two

Experience the incredibly rich world of four-hand piano repertoire in a structured, supportive setting. The goal is to channel existing pianistic abilities into this delightful, intimate form of chamber music. These six substantial sessions are intended to bring students to a point where they can continue on their own to explore the diverse world of this genre which ranges from delightful trifles to some of the great masterpieces of music. There will be an opportunity for an informal recital after the last session. Students will audition and be paired to form a duo for the duration of the course. Existing duos are also encouraged to audition. Six 45 minute coachings will be arranged with the instructor, and students will rehearse in pairs on their own for an additional 45 minute-minute slot. Open to intermediate to advanced pianists.

This time slot will accommodate 2 pairs. Additional times may be arranged upon demand.

VOICE

VOICE CLASS

If you wish to learn vocal skills from the ground up, this class is for you. Learn breathing, posture, and how to do an effective warm-up. As a group we will sing a wide range of songs from folk songs, pop and show tunes to simple classical songs. Each student will progress to sing solo songs of his/her own choosing. A fun way to learn to practice and improve. For adults and students ages 15 and older. Prerequisite: ability to read music or concurrent enrollment in "How to Read Music". Students who register concurrently in the Voice Class and How to Read Music will receive a 25% discount on How to Read Music. Enrollment limited to 20.

PREPARING FOR CHORUS AUDITIONS

Chorus singers! Come work on your voice in a comfortable group setting, prepare an audition piece, and practice sight-reading in this four-week course. You will learn effective warm-up exercises to get your voice in shape for the fall auditions and practice learning new pieces effectively. You will also have a chance to stand up and sing your audition piece in the comfortable ambience of a supportive class. Classes will include a look at some local choruses to help each student set realistic goals. Enrollment limited to 12. Must have ability to read music but not necessarily sight-read.
